What do you think of This Painting done by The Artist Kazimir Malevich  in 1917 ?

You like it? explain why     post a short comment and put your name everytime you post ~ write your post after the last post ( under)...

Steven Barbo- Well I really don't know, it is not really cup of tea. I guess you have to try new things, but you won't find this hanging in my home.

Kristen Boyd-Higgins - I like the simplicity of this and the color palette which gives it a softer feel.

+

Kim Hillman- I like it, it shows a lot of depth with simple shapes and bland colors.

Will - I like that it seems to demonstrate great technical ability and very careful use of line and color. It does not look like "a 4 year old could have done it"! I especially like the balance between the large shapes of pale colors and the very small areas of red.

Kristen M. - I like the "modern" look of it, the clean lines and neutral colors.

Bonnie-I like his use of color in the different shapes.

Brenda - I like the way the long rectangular elements lead the eye from one part of the painting to another.  I feel that it is harmoneous and calm.

Jean Bowden- I do like the colors he chose and the clean crisp lines.  It seems almost like a puzzle needing to be put together.

Rebecca- I like it. I like the use of the different shapes and the soothing colors used. The small areas of red catch my eye.

Ryan L.- I like it. It has great colors and clean lines. I like that everone could have a completly different feeling when looking at it.

Dan M. - I enjoy how the painting has a washed out look to it, its not trying to stimulate yet it will catch your attention.

Jessica- I think it is alright. I like the simpleness of it, it looks like something to hang in an office.

Amy R.- I like this painting.  It takes some time to gain an appreciation for this artist's work.  It is very interesting.

James B- I really think the painting is really cool, its very simple...yet it looks like he put a lot of work into it and it just stands out as something very simple but it got its point across.

Violet- I don't dislike it, but I'm not sure I like it either. It reminds me of a child's broken toy, a wooden truck. Only the colors are soft so somehow the fact the toy is not broken is ok. Maybe someone will fix it. I wouldn't like to see it on a wall. I think I'd like it better on the floor as an area rug in a play room.

You don't like it? explain why

Steven Barbo- I don't likr it because I don't understand it, I would prefer paintings of real life things, landscapes, people, animals. Something i can relate to.

Kristen Boyd-Higgins - I don't like the mechanical look of it.

+

Kim Hillman- At the same time I dont like it. I prefer to see paintings of still life, animals cars, SOMETHING. Not shapes and funky things.

Will - It shows emotion but for me it isn't a positive emotion. It seems arrogant and emphatically NOT about nature. I think I might "like" it more at it's full size.

Kristen M. - Even though I like the smooth, clean lines, I also like to see a little more movement or life to a painting.

Bonnie- I don't care for his style.

Brenda- This kind of work is so subjective, I wonder how critics can agree on its value.

Ashton Verhaaren - its not a bad painting, i just feel the colors are to much a like. the colors just seem to fade in to eachother. i perfer paintings that have brite fun colors or dark mystical colors.

Crystal Morin- I don't like this painting because it seems too simple. I look at it like there is supposed to be something more to be done to it.

Rebecca- I think that there could be more going on.

Amy R.- Sometimes I don't like it because it baffles me as to what the artist is trying to say!

Erin G.- I am undecided.  If this painting was hanging in a log cabin I would probably hate it.  On the other hand if it were in a ultra-modern high-rise Miama condo I might love it.  I do find myself asking what it is the artist wants us to see and learn from it.  Also I might have a completely different impression if I were able to see it in person and not have to scroll up and down to view the entire painting.

James B- Reason I have against this painting is that it seems like he was leading towards something but then just stopped and said  "Hey, im done." so it sorta leaves you with thinking what was he trying to tell us?

Can you describe what you see?

Ashton Verhaaren- to me it looks like a layout almost. like a floor plan, or a memory of some place .

Steven Barbo-I see a number of shapes and a few colors but nothing that jumps out at me, it just looks like the starting step to something bigger.

Kristen Boyd-Higgins - I see several geometric shapes which seem to be aligned in a funtional, mechanical manner.

+

Kim Hillman- Layers of shapes.. different but bland  colors.

Will - The shapes and colors seem very controlled. There's nothing random or spontaneous about any of it.

Kristen M. - There is a very clear separation with the diagonal line near the middle and a careful asymmetrical balance to it. Even though it's revolutionary, it almost seems as though he didn't want to offend anyone, it's almost passive.

Bonnie-I see different colored shapes floating on the picture. The larger shapes are lighter in color, the smaller shapes are dark and bold.

Brenda- The long pink rectangle divides the painting into top and bottom and the small red rectangles emphasize the division.  The curved and square shapes in the bottom give it gravity. The smaller elements in the top give it airiness.

Jean Bowden- It looks like books to me and libraries. I do not know why but it looks like books and book shelves.

Crystal Morin- I see rectangles and a few curved shapes. There are background shapes as well as shapes painted more boldly in the foreground. The bold black strip in the foreground and the green striped at the top of the painting make your eye go through the painting from bottom to top.

Rebecca- I see geometric shapes of different colors. The long pink and black rectangles make it appear longitudinal to me. I think it looks like a man wearing a hat with a cigarette in his mouth.

Ryan- It looks like a short man with glasses and a hat to me.

Dan M. - Looks like an eagle eyed view of a college campus.

Jessica- I think it looks almost like a sky view of the ocean, the long black rectangle is the dock, and the shorter rectangles a boat in the harbor, with the pink looking like a barrier for the pier.

Amy R.- This painting seems like civilization is falling into place, or balance.  It seems to have elements of the earth, mountians, sun or moon, and human building objects.

Erin G.- I see a rectangular canvas with several off centered various sized geometric shapes of varying colors.  Some bland and others more vibrant.  The focal point possibly being the one shape that seems to blend into the canvas.

James B- When I look at this it makes me think of something someone might use as a base plan for a new building, it seems like it could be used at that just because of the area of the painting, its widened and looks pretty similar to a design a builder might use as his beginning base plan.

Violet - I see mostly rectangles of varing hues and a few other odd shapes. The light color in the back round that in some area seems to have clear boundaries and in others the shading is more gradual, I think this is was some how gives me the sense of movement, that coupled with the circle.

Can you find Online something interesting to share with us about Malevich or what he paint...?

Ashton Verhaaren-  in 1915, when he painted a black square on a white field, setting in motion a series of artworks that became the focal point for the Russian avant-garde.

Kristen Boyd-Higgins - After he made a trip to Paris in 1912, he was influenced by Picasso and Cubis.

+Kim Hillman- He was the founder and leading artist of the suprematist movement and one of russias best known painters.

Will - I came across a quote from Kandinsky about abstract art attempting to express "pure emotion" and that seems to describe Malevich's work.

Will -

Kristen M. - The Soviets restricted his work and he wound up painting pottery for a living when he began to disagree with the government.

Bonnie- Because of his association with german artists, he was arrested in 1930 and many of his manuscripts were distroyed.

Jean Bowden- I read that people have a hard time figuring out which way to hang his paintings.

Brenda- Malevich's early abstract work was influenced by Russian religious icons.

Jean Bowden - I found a great website that showed how his works have shapes in them and also things like Boats.  REBECCA mentions this above and so does Ryan

http://www.nga.gov/kids/kandinsky/kandinsky2.htm

This is the site and it shows his colors, his shapes etc

Jean Bowden OPPS that is for Kandinsky not Malevich. I like them both really

Dan M. - He was never able to get into the Moscow school of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture.

Jessica- I found a site that has his bibliography stating that he didn't even know what art was called. And he began his art career without even knowing it when he was about 14, his quote reads. "I was very excited to watch the peasants paint; I helped them cover the floors of their houses with clay and paint motifs onto the stoves.”

James B- I really enjoyed this painting. http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/malevich/malevich.soldier-1st.jpg . From the looks of it, it looks like hes trying to draw something with everything combined, its like hes thrown everything he enjoys into one painting and in my mind it looks fabulous

Jean Bowden- I had posted the wrong site. That link is for Kandinsky not Malevich SORRY.

Amy R.- I like this painting by Malevich better.  http://www.guggenheimcollection.org/site/artist_work_md_94_1.html

Erin G.-  From what I understand, not only was he the founder of Suprematism, (which in itself I am baffled by) he "called on other artists to apply the suprematists principles to architecture, music, poetry, theatre, and book designs all intended for broad public consumption".

emily r. i think that this painting is one that you have to stare at for a little while until you can understand or take away whatevery you want to get from the painting. I liked this painting and i like abstract art because their is no right or wrong way to create abstract art.
