After completing my abstract art assignment, I wanted to learn a bit more about Kandinsky. I admit to having a difficult time trying to understand the message or emotion that is portrayed. So off to the library I went to check out a illustrated version.
What I did learn is that Kandinsky was involved with the art movement in different roles. He painted, taught, wrote and published while organizing exhibits for Money, Kubin and other Impressionist. Kandinsky sought to "bridge the divisions between genres, and no systematic ground in technique". Later he became "preoccupied with finding a trigger for the vibrations of the pysche that would correspond to the universe and the eternal order of things". Whether or not Kandinsky actually found the trigger can only be answered by the observer.
My Sketch - Version I
I finally finished my sketch that I wanted to post on my Wiki page. While I don't think I give her justice to the pose or her "essence" - this is one of my Springer Spaniels named Rue. Rue is a very independent-minded girl and has big brown eyes with long lashes. She is a goofy girl and loves to "talk" using her head, wagging her tail and midsection and using her front paws to get her message across. She has a great sense of humor and you can actually tell when she laughs.
My hope is that I will do another drawing of her which will do her justice to her free spirit and humor, and by the end of class....you will see her clearly through my eyes.
Re: How I feel about the hybrid class:
I will have to say that I like the concept and after a few on-line classes, I am getting a pretty good feel for the dedication and passion of drawing. The ability to go on-line and look at the lessons over and over again helps me retain the informaiton more readily. I am learning to visualize things around me in a new perspective and dimension. My only frustration at this point is that I didn't start drawing earlier in my life.
My body has failed me......
I have been so anxious about my drawings and learning more techniques - I was so looking forward to class. But there are limits to one's physical being, pain reminds us when enough is enough. It is only been 3 weeks since my surgery and I am frustrated that I will not be able to attend class. I have been keeping up with homework and sketches, but I was looking forward to the interaction with the class and Philippe.
The pictures from last week's class are wonderful - my classmates are doing well with their drawings. Keep up the good work!
Deborah, Thanks for your nice comments! The next Class will be Online ( Nov, 22 )
You can take advantage of all these nice drawings posted Online; Try to copy some of them -- You also learn from copying. Hope to see you in Class next time. Philippe
This sketch was inspired by a stranding that I attended in May 2006 on a west Dennis beach. The actual whale that I assisted with was a pigmy pilot whale which is rare to find unless you are a researcher searching for the species. They are not common in the Cape Cod area, more stranding occur in Austrilia. She was a beautiful creature and I was fortunate to witness her presence. She will leave an impression on my life.
Thank goodness Al doesn't know about this sketch. I am having difficulty getting the right side of my brain to do the drawing and not the left side. While I understand that art is subjective - I don't think I can pass off as a Picasso....
This portrait is better than last week's (Al Pacino), but needs a little more depth to it so that it is not so linear.
So this is the last week for class and I have learned quite a bit. While I am frustrated with my portraits, I have learned basic techniques that, with practice, I can improve upon. The hybrid class provided me with the opportunity to keep in touch with the class while I was out because of surgery - and I am very grateful.
